Hythe Community Cinema is a friendly and well supported film society which serves the town of Hythe in Kent and which shows a wide variety of intriguing films.
From October 2015 we have been screening our films in the beautifully renovated Tin Tabernacle, a small Victorian chapel converted into a community space. Our equipment was supplied by the British Film Institute which means that the picture and sound quality of our films is of an unusually high standard for a local film society.
There are ten films a year between October and July, on the first Tuesday of the month. We screen a range of international and British films, focusing on the work of independent film directors – the sort of films it’s often difficult to catch in mainstream cinemas.
We hope that our film club is a valuable community resource for a town that has little in the way of evening entertainment.
The Hythe Community Cinema is run by a committee of film enthusiasts. The committee is elected at the AGM which takes place each summer. The members of the current committee are:
- Jean Nelson – Secretary
- Monica de la Mare – Treasurer
- Kath Yore – Refreshments
- Monica de la Mare – Tickets; transition
- Noel Curtin – Equipment set-up
- Brenda Smirnoff – Film night notes
- Melanie Dakin – Website/publicity
- Fred Parker – Master of ceremonies
- Sue Turnbull – Film licences
- Mandy Jones – Facebook; emailing
- Mary Sampson – Guardian of the bell
Films are selected by the committee. At the end of each film, members of the audience give feedback on their enjoyment of it. The feedback is analysed and we use it to guide us in the selection of subsequent films. We consider suggestions from members for specific films.
If you would like to join the committee of the Hythe Community Cinema to help guide the future of the cinema, select films, etc, please let us know – see ‘contact us’ page, or talk to us at a screening.
Please also let us know if you would like to help in other ways without joining the committee, for instance by helping prepare refreshments, taking entrance money or delivering leaflets.
